Shantiniketan was founded Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore as International University. It was meant to be a place where the cultures of East and West meet.

This abode of peace contains some splendid sculptures, paintings, frescoes of many of Bengal’s famous artists. Shantiniketan is also surrounded by a beautiful wooded area and Deer Park. Here you will find herds of deer and many varieties of birds. Shantiniketan holds many festivals of song, dance and drama. Through the years it has become the Mecca for Indian and foreign artists wishing to learn and contribute to its corpus.

This cultural tour to Shantiniketan starts with you being picked up from your hotel.

  • Morning drive from Kolkata to Shantiniketan. The drive time takes a little over four hours.
  • On arrival you check-in at the hotel.
  • After you check-in at the hotel you then visit the Ashram.
  • The places of interest are mainly on the campus and have a distinctive feature of some of the best in Indian art and culture.
  • China Bhavan: The Chinese Faculty.
  • Chhatimtala: Here Maharshi Devendranath, the father of Rabindranath Tagore, used to meditate. Prayers are held usually at Convocation time. Successful graduates of the Vishwa Bharati University are presented a branch of five leaves each from the Saptaparni trees which abound in the area.
  • Kala Bhavan: The College of Fine Arts and Crafts has a museum exhibiting sculptures, frescoes and murals and a library of art books.
  • Path Bhavan: Now a secondary school, it is of particular interest as an example of the traditional `Brahmacharya Ashram'.
  • Prayer Hall: Founded by Rabindranath's father in 1863, the hall is made of glass. Prayers are held on Wednesday.
  • Bichitra: Also called Rabindra Bhavan, a Research Centre and Museum where the poet's personal belongings, paintings and various editions of his works are exhibited.
  • Sangeet Bhavan: College of Dance and Music. The University is replete with works on Art, Music and the Humanities.
  • Uttarayan Complex: The poet lived and worked in the Northern Complex.
