This specially designed photography tour will help you to discover and experience a city through the eyes of a local photographer.
Your guide-cum-photographer has in-depth local knowledge, a passion for their city and for the art of photography. So bring your camera and be prepared to walk, shoot and click.
The tour starts from Sheridan Square, in the heart of Greenwich Village. There are many streets that lead to Sheridan Square. Once you're there, be on the lookout for the small park with the white statues, where the tour group will meet.
You will be accompanied by an English-speaking photographer-cum-guide, Cary Conover who specializes in travel photography and is well versed with the locales worth capturing on camera.
Walk through the nearby streets that make up some the most scenic and sought-after residential real estate in Manhattan. The streets of Greenwich Village retain their original haphazard layout, complete with diagonals, odd angles and dead-end alleys. Even life-long New Yorkers can get lost trying to navigate these streets.
See the Commerce and Barrow, a scenic block that appears to be absolutely unchanged since the 1790s. Here you'll definitely get a unique perspective on how the scales and perspectives of the Village can change from block to block.
- Head east through Bleecker Street and stroll through another dog-leg street, Minetta Lane.
- Visit the epicentre of Greenwich Village, the Washington Square Park. Here you can photograph the fountain which is a popular meeting point for people of all ages. You can also witness impromptu jam sessions by guitarist and drummers and magicians. You'll also get some great views looking up Fifth Avenue, which begins at the north end of the park.
- Near by is the New York University which adds a touch of freshness to this aging neighbourhood.
- Venture south past Houston Street and reach the neighborhood known as SoHo, which stands for South of Houston. SoHo is now known for its upscale clothing boutiques and restaurants.
- Cross Broadway and head a little south and a little east, into Little Italy. Mulberry Street is known unofficially as the main street of Little Italy, because each year it hosts the immensely popular Feast of San Gennaro Festival.
- Continue to Chinatown. The main artery through Chinatown is Canal Street, which is always full of tourists looking for discounts on imitation Rolex watches and Gucci bags. Canal Street is by many measures the true cusp of downtown Manhattan.
- Go a few more blocks south and reach another dog-leg street, Doyers. From there you'll have plenty of affordable Chinese restaurants to choose from for lunch (payable direct).
- At the end of the session your photographer-guide will review some of the photos taken (if you are carrying a digital camera). You will have learnt the basics of composition, the importance of light in photography, how to take balanced and attractive images, and simple techniques to take "creative" images.
