Explore Vietnamese culture and tradition on this holiday as you ride a motorbike across the country’s picturesque landscapes, pretty ethnic villages and mountain passes. Start your journey from Hanoi moving west to Hoa Binh province situated in the mountainous region (700 metres above sea level) in north central Vietnam. Visit Tay village and meet the colourful Tay tribe and learn more about their festivals, language, traditional literature and lore. Marvel at the Sugarcane Pagoda in the village of Dong Sang in the Son Tay province, popularly known as Mia pagoda. The pagoda is on a hill top and is divided into three parts – Ha pagoda, Trong pagoda and Thuong Dien. Continue your journey to the Va Temple in the Son Tay province. The temple, built in the 17th century by the Le Trung Hung dynasty, now belongs to Trung Hung village where the locals follow the cult of Tan Vien Son Tinh.
Spend the evening with the tribes and join them in their traditional dance. In the morning, proceed to Son La past villages of Xom Lon, Suoi Rut, Thao Nguyen, Moc Chau, Yen Chau and Na San. Admire the panoramic beauty of Son La, its mountains covered with patches of vegetation, quaint villages laced with fruit orchards and rice fields... Look out for displays of jewellery, crafts and colourful garments of tribal people at a small ethnographic museum in the old warden’s building. After spending a night in Son La, you continue on your bike holiday in Vietnam across the remote town of Ban Vay and Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu. Replete with rice farms and surrounded by steep, green hills, this heart-shaped valley was once the site of a 57-day siege and the subsequent end French colonization in Asia. Next morning, head north (100 kilometres) from Dien Bien Phu to Lai Chau. Bask in the scenic beauty of the region and explore its hilly terrain. You can climb up the hillside and see dilapidated French mansions and remnants of colonial architecture. After an overnight stay in Lai Chau, ride to Sa Pa, formerly known as Tam Duong. The tribes in Sa Pa are known to be friendly with tourists and will not shy away if you are photographing them. Take a stroll around the region and see vast stretches of terraced rice fields. Next morning, you journey back to Hanoi past Van Ban and Viet Tri. This is one bike holiday in Vietnam you shouldn’t miss!
