Montreal- Pillar Of Strength
North America | Ricky | November 27, 2009 at 3:08 amReputed as the second largest city of Canada and the largest region in entire Quebec City, Montreal is one of the most splendid cities. Majestic royalty adorns its name, as it has derived the name ‘Montreal’ from triple peaked hill ‘Mont-Royal,’ that stands proudly in the heart of the city. Initially, this name was tagged to the island, which shelters the city
today. Even, its geographical positioning nearby the European coast, alike that of Vancouver devotes Montreal with some of the finesse qualities. Characterized by a blend of some of the excelling traits of the two continents, Montreal makes a pleasant city worth visiting.
Montreal’s architectural style and designs are completely out-of-the-world and leaves one’s jaw-dropping. The North American skyline formulated out of lustrous glass and concrete materials looms high beyond the level of monuments and churches, to grab the eye-balls of the people. The fusion of European styles is as diverse as Montreal’s social mix. The populace of Montreal comprises of gigantic masses of people largely speaking in French, ultimately making it the second largest French speaking city followed after Paris, despite the general fact that only two-third of the city’s three and a half million people hail to French origin. Rest of the population makes a multi-ethnic hodgepodge of diverse section of people such as British, Eastern Europe, Chinese, Italians, Jews, South Americans and West Indians.
This characteristic gives birth to a vivacious, multi-faceted and vibrant Montreal. The outcome has lead to a universal assortment of bars, restaurants and clubs. Also, the city immerses in fabulous festivities round the year. Turning the
pages of history, Montreal’s roles can be clearly noticed as a great divider. Actually, it has always played a crucial role in progressing Quebec separatism and this is obvious as two major linguistic groups face each other frequently here. All this tension between the two linguistic groups of English and French advanced to the crest in the terrorist campaign, during the late 1960’s when Front de Liberation du Quebec focused on the city. The political repercussions of this issue hit the region of Montreal very badly, than any other place.
The region was most affected during the beginning of “Francization” of Quebec, when large hordes of English-Canadian masses hit Highway 401. All this created a devastating effect on Montreal as the country’s major economic power shifted from Montreal to Toronto. However despite of the rebellious Canada’s English-speaking people’s predominance, Montreal stood firmly and didn’t fell void. It was due to this firmness and fortitude that the city of Montreal rose up again, even more than the past. In fact, it was this moment that can be traced as Montreal’s rebirth which gave that strong impetus that worked as a driving force behind the formulation of high-tech industry. Today, Montreal’s high-tech industry plays a significant role in the economy, and it is because of this that has transformed Canada’s economy. Montreal has stood on the integral quote cited by Ralph Waldo Emerson “Patience and fortitude conquer all things.”
