There are many pristine beaches to be found in Sri Lanka. Negombo is a beautiful fishing town in the north of Colombo in the district of Gampaha. There are plenty of groves of coconut trees lining and filling this town of Negombo. The beaches here are beautiful and there is whole variety of sea food to be tasted. The prawns and the lobsters can be caught in the turquoise blue lagoons. While the herring, mullet, skipjack is brought in by the catamaran and the canoe of the old fishing world.
You can watch the famous stilt fisher men in action in Weligama. It is a serene and picturesque bay which is 27km from Galle. This town has a warm and sunny weather most of the time. There is an islet off the shore where lies the dream house of a French Count. This bay with its enchanting beaches lies in the district of Matara.
Historical Heritage architecture and mystical beaches:
Galle is another city which is 116km away from the south of Colombo. This town in the south has a old world charm to it. In the glory days of the past the natural bay of Galle was once a very famous fort. This place is renowned for its ebony carving, lace making and gem polising. The Dutch fort is a must see in this sweet town of Galle. This place is believed to be the Tarshish of the bible.
Mount Lavinia is found in the district of Colombo and is 12km south of Colombo city. Since the colonial times this place is known for its beaches. Mount Lavinia is a city suburb. The famous Mount Lavinia Hotel has the Governors House which was built in 1805 as one of its buildings. The sand of this dreamy city is soft indeed and the waves are warm and calm. Mount Lavinia lies beside a wind blown headland that is jutting into the Indian Ocean.

Beruwala lies 56km away to the south of Colombo. It lies in the District of Kalutara. Beruwala is the starting point of the 130km wide spread beach shores. This area has a seen a rapid development of resorts in the recent years. The weather and conditions have for an enjoyable bathing experience round the year at Beruwala.
In the district of Galle lies the sunny and warm town center of Ambalangoda. This place is well known for its beaches, the mask masking centers here. It is also home to devil dancing. It is half an hour’s drive away from Bentota.
Scuba diving:
Hikkaduwa lies in the district of Galle. It is situated 98km to the south of Colombo. It a great place to experience the underwater marine world of coral and exotic fishes. This site is famous for its gardens of coral. You can hire a pair of flippers and goggles or a glass bottomed boat to explore the world hidden under the ocean. For the sake of the environment its wonder we request you not to encourage or purchase corals. As these are fast disappearing and being destroyed and soon will be endangered.
Honeymoon Getaway:
Located to the south of Colombo and 62 km away for it is the town of Bentota. This is a great honeymoon destination. The prime attraction and best accommodation is at the Bentota Resort Complex. It is a romantic getaway with the magical combination of river and the seas. There are several hotels to match your budget. There is a shopping arcade, cafeteria, post office and railway station all nearby. There is an open air theatre in the back drop of clusters of palm trees where folk dances and mask dancing takes place.
